Why a music blog? Have you ever noticed how many people relate over music? The music we listen to is a window into our moods, our souls. Always temporal, evolving. One day it's the beat, the rhythm, the melody. Another day it's the lyrics. With it's ability to carry us away into another time and place, a cherished memory or a fantasy escape, music helps us transcend or endure the mundane. Music helps us make sense of painful experiences or confusing emotions, or safely, cathartically re-experience those feelings. And it has the transformative power to alter our mood for the better or worse. The kind of music we enjoy is a very personal thing, a matter of taste that cannot be imposed by another, but grows instead out of our own histories and sensibilities. And yet what pleasure to find others who like what you like -- you can share aural space with them without getting a headache or losing your mind. You can lead each other to discover new artists and genres. If you take the time to read all or the occasional entry, I hope you find a treat in this log of tunes.

I had a music club snafu and ended up with a double cd set of Barry Manilow live, thought I'd give it a spin. It's basically show tunes. If this kind of music would rock your world, send me your address and it's yours.
In other news, the car has been settled, but they don't cover cds in the car! wah! But I got a pretty decent payout on the buick so I guess I can't really complain. Won't stop me though -- I mean, they covered the bags of clothes I had for the GoodWill. Why wouldn't they cover the kind of personal property one would actually expect to be carrying in a car, like tunes? Friday, January 14, 2005
Well guess what, the control freak in me just loosened up a little - I've added the ability to post comments! this means you can respond to what I've said or just say whatever. I think this is effective now. Hello out there....!!!!! (Oh and of course if I really don't like what you say, I can always *BLEEP* it! ah the power...)

more like what's NOT in the cd player today! since my car was stolen (day after Christmas at the hospital I volunteer at - that's bad karma, mr car thief!) I've been trying to determine which cds were in that car -- the new Ani di Franco, Groove Armada, three funkin' Prince albums, one Walela, Robbie Robertson, Randy Travis, Leonard Cohen, Love and Rockets, Steve Stevens, my favorite Los Lobos cd (the Neighborhood), and in the player at the time of the crime, Blind Boys of Alabama gospel Christmas cd which I had had less than 24 hours. (But I heard enough to recommend it. They have a great Little Drummer Boy on there, and lots of other good stuff.)
OK so the car may not be the worst case, as I was in excess car territory since I bought Kathy's fiesty beamer. But I was very fond of the Princessmobile and it was a better commuter car really, what with the automatic transmission, cushy seats, dual cupholders, and cd player in reach of the driver. And worse, I feel so much more vulnerable, which is only made worse by the spate of recent attacks on women locally. The following week there was a rape of a woman on the train that I use when I ride the train, in BROAD DAYLIGHT!!!! Seems like you should be safe on a commuter train. And I just found out the victim of another assault in Forest Park after a woman got off the same line New Years Eve was the roommate of a friend of mine, making it all very close to home. At least they got the bastard becuase she put up a hell of a fight -- apparently he was trying to get to the hospital when the police arrested him. He is the suspect in the two attacks in Wrigleyville as well. |
