Why a music blog? Have you ever noticed how many people relate over music? The music we listen to is a window into our moods, our souls. Always temporal, evolving. One day it's the beat, the rhythm, the melody. Another day it's the lyrics. With it's ability to carry us away into another time and place, a cherished memory or a fantasy escape, music helps us transcend or endure the mundane. Music helps us make sense of painful experiences or confusing emotions, or safely, cathartically re-experience those feelings. And it has the transformative power to alter our mood for the better or worse. The kind of music we enjoy is a very personal thing, a matter of taste that cannot be imposed by another, but grows instead out of our own histories and sensibilities. And yet what pleasure to find others who like what you like -- you can share aural space with them without getting a headache or losing your mind. You can lead each other to discover new artists and genres. If you take the time to read all or the occasional entry, I hope you find a treat in this log of tunes.

Friendly Pressure is the trip-a-day song today on 95.5 WNUA. Not that it does me any good.

ok, so it's been about three weeks. But I have an excuse. I've moved and that means chaos. Of course, I do still have tunes flowing at home. Just one at a time on the little baby boombox I bought for listening to during cleanup and painting sessions. One at a time I have listened to a few things from my CD box, all those CDs that never got loaded into the jukebox. They are more or less alphabetized in the box, and on the top are the end of the alphabet. So it's been Yello (Oh Yeah...), Tammy Wynette (talk about depressing!), Bob Wills (this guy had to be up to no good... and if you want to enjoy a rollicking tale check out Lone Star Swing: On the Trail of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, written by Duncan Maclean of Scotland who simply adores Western Swing and has fun tracking down the old bandmembers. I loved this book, but it got mixed reviews on Amazon.), and of course good old Randy Travis. I'm probably going to get out the Zap Mama next.
In the car, it's been NPR NPR NPR. Gotta keep up with the war. For a while I had to stop, and then it was the Smooth Jazz to try and mellow me out. At work, Eric hooked me up with Kazaa Lite and I finally found the song Friendly Pressure I've been looking for for years. Part of my problem was I thought it was Precious, not Pressure so all previous searches had been doomed. Then someone did a cover that has gotten radio play, and I heard the correct name. It sounds awful on my laptop. I'm still sorting out the versions, once I have the one I want, I'll have to investigate the artist with the silky sounds. Mostly though, I just listen to the waves from the Harmon Realty website. Mmmmm waves. I'm too broke to splurge on new cds, but it's ok because there's a lot of long neglected cds in that big box...gotta hook up the stereo.. or taxes, gotta do taxes.... more smooth jazz please I sense a headache coming on... |
