what's in the cd player today?

what I'm listening to, and why I like it

Why a music blog? Have you ever noticed how many people relate over music? The music we listen to is a window into our moods, our souls. Always temporal, evolving. One day it's the beat, the rhythm, the melody. Another day it's the lyrics. With it's ability to carry us away into another time and place, a cherished memory or a fantasy escape, music helps us transcend or endure the mundane. Music helps us make sense of painful experiences or confusing emotions, or safely, cathartically re-experience those feelings. And it has the transformative power to alter our mood for the better or worse. The kind of music we enjoy is a very personal thing, a matter of taste that cannot be imposed by another, but grows instead out of our own histories and sensibilities. And yet what pleasure to find others who like what you like -- you can share aural space with them without getting a headache or losing your mind. You can lead each other to discover new artists and genres. If you take the time to read all or the occasional entry, I hope you find a treat in this log of tunes.

On the way into the office this morning, I played Robbie Robertson's Classic Masters, which I thought I had lent out, but which I've had all along. It was just what I needed to feel my real again. Classic Masters, Robertson's cd of roots music, more of his Music for Native Americans, is a collaboration with other native american artists to produce some very modern native music. It's also a much-needed history lesson at times. postmodernism at it's best, and a well-received gift to the many lost and unconnected 'breeds out there. Welcome to my country.
(oh and I disagree with Jonathan Katz' review, this is not a spin-once CD, but yeah, get the earlier albums for sure.)

oooh I can't wait, my dear friend Mat tells me his new cd is in the mail...The Keeper's Log. If you haven't gotten his first cd, The Lighthouse Keeper (referenced in prior commentary), it's not too late, he is now distributed via the web. It's even on sale! You won't regret it. I'll let you know what the second one's like when I get it...the pressure's on, Mat!

Yesterday, I was listening to Merle Haggard's The Peer Sessions (2002) -- the old songs are lovely choices, but the studio album is too polished. Picky me, for the straight guitar and oldtime style I must be expecting scratches, or audience sounds in the background. With such perfect studio polish, I'm looking for something extra, something you can't get on stage but only through the added production value, maybe some lush layering. Funny, I don't have this complaint about Norah Jones, whose cd I have playing at home...maybe because she has made her covers of the old country standards truly her own -- a good thing with her slow, dreamy piano tempos and silky yet crystal clean voice. She certainly deserves the acclaim -- thanks to everyone who kept asking me, "Do you like Norah Jones?" In fact, I do. Merle's got a sweet honey voice though, so the cd will surely grow on me, and I just know I'd love to hear him play live... he's working in a Northern CA. studio now, wonder if he's doing any shows back home...

And this morning, it was back to Spanish 101. Me llamo Andree. Donde esta el centro?

Today it's Spanish language cds in the car, yes I am trying to learn Spanish on my commute. Might as well make that time productive. Buenas Dias.
